The Need for Apologetics

“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Peter 3:15, NIV).

After Peter healed a man lame from birth by calling on the name of Jesus, the Jewish hierarchy were upset. They ordered Peter and John not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, “We cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20, NIV). About thirty years after Jesus’ death and resurrection, Paul writes, “In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world” (Colossians 1:6, NIV).

There is only one true God, the Creator of the heavens and earth. He is personal, eternal, unchanging and sovereign. He created time and people. Yet all humans have rebelled against God. We prefer to worship ourselves, other created beings, or gods of our own imagination. These gods we can control or reduce to our own understanding. Therefore God declares, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9, KJV).

Apologetics defends and explains the true Gospel in order to refute error. Its ultimate purpose is to open spiritual eyes to our need for the Saviour—the only one who can restore us to fellowship with God.

These days so many people believe that there are many roads to heaven. The Lord Jesus, on the other hand, says, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6, NIV).
